'Bigger than baseball': WarDogs take on Corn Belt League in military honor game

OMAHA, Neb. —
America's favorite pastime meets America's armed forces on the U.S. WarDogs baseball team. The WarDogs are veterans from across the country, traveling to share their love of the game and their mission to honor fallen soldiers.

"Emotions are high, especially for everybody that's a veteran, or that's been through the military. Emotions are everywhere," Jacob Banda, WarDogs pitcher and Army veteran, said.

Friday night they take on Omaha's Corn Belt League in the second annual military appreciation game. Players from all the Corn Belt teams will participate, and they each have a relative who served.

"Just a nice little scene for people to come out and use baseball as a way to pass on heritage," Sonny Sunegal, CBL Cropdusters head coach, said.

A heritage that CBL Black Sox player Levi Hilton knows well. His brother served in the Navy along with other family members. They can't make it, but Hilton's looking on the bright side.

"I'm just really excited to meet these guys, have an experience, and enjoy the game," Hilton said. "I think it's going to be great, and I'm going to probably meet somebody that I'll never forget."
The WarDogs also provide veterans with a community with which they can connect.
